Small Swedish Bitters are a combination of herbs originally put together by a Swedish physician, Dr Samst, a rector of medicine who reputedly lived to the grand old age of one hundred and four years.
They were subsequently extensively used, with apparent good effect, by the well known Austrian Herbalist Maria Treben, to treat a wide variety of ailments. The individual herbs which combine to make this traditional remedy possess long histories in their own right as cleansing, detoxifying and healing plants. For example, the roots of Angelica archangelica have a well established reputation as a warming, carminative, digestive tonic. Senna is well known for its cleansing actions on the bowel & Carline thistle has been used since medieval times as an antidote to poisons.
In combination, these herbs can be seen to represent a powerful cleansing, tonic remedy, with a wide application to many of the chronic illnesses which are prevalent in modern day living. Small Swedish Bitters have been traditionally used in conditions typified by pain, physical debility and
